Acute bronchitis

Bronchitis without pneumonia is almost alway viral in etiology and antibiotic therapy is NOT recommended

NOTE: Whooping cough (Bordetella pertussis)

  • May mimic acute bronchitis and is under-diagnosed.
  • Higher incidence seen in adults on Vancouver Island.
  • Investigate if persistent cough (greater than 3 weeks), especially if associated with vomiting.
