Acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis (AECB)

Underlying chronic bronchitis or COPD. Patient has at least two of the following:

  • increase sputum
  • purulence
  • dyspnea

Uncomplicated

  • No previous antibiotics in past 3 months
  • Less than 4 episodes/year

Usual Pathogens
Haemophilus spp.
S. pneumoniae
Moraxella catarrhalis

Recommended Empiric Therapy

Amoxicillin 500 mg PO TID
OR
Doxycycline 100 mg PO BID with food
OR
TMP/SMX 1 DS tab PO BID
